Extended across a broad wind-sheltered slope, south of the village of Wintzenheim, this cru faces south-southeast and exhibits calcareous and marl soils, producing rich, full-bodied wines. In its youth the wine has an untamed character (Hengst means "STALLION" in German). Jean Meyer grows Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Auxerrois, and Pinot Gris here.
Cask and bottle aging refines and tames the wine. If there were a Grand Cru for Pinot Auxerrois, then this would surely be it, as the wines from this grape have a very fine verbena aroma and a certain raciness unique to this cru. Jean Meyer's Pinot Auxerrois "H" grapes are grown in this specific chalky marl vineyard.
