Angelo_ca'marcanda

Angelo Gaja, owner and president of the Gaja Winery and the Ca’Marcanda Estate, is a fourth-generation Piemontese winemaker. Internationally acknowledged as one of Italy's and the world's greatest winemakers, Angelo Gaja has been responsible for bold innovations in the vineyards and the cellars. Among his innovations in Piemontese winemaking are the use of barriques (225-liter French oak barrels) for aging wines and his plantings of the region's first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard of the 20th century as well as its first Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.

Angelo Gaja is known for producing elegant, opulent wines that are true to their origins. He is a pioneer in the production of single-vineyard wines in Piemonte. The quality of his wines is such that they have been described by Wine Spectator, as "perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made."

In 1996, Angelo Gaja decided to transfer the experience of his Piedmontese culture to the Maremma by purchasing the Ca’Marcanda Estate. The Maremma provides a perfect opportunity to apply this experience to growing international varietals. The 150 acres of vineyards are planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but also contain Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

Born in Alba in 1940, Angelo attended the highly respected Enological Institute of Alba, from which he graduated in 1960 with a degree in enology. He also holds a master's degree in economics from the University of Torino.

Angelo and his wife Lucia live in Barbaresco with their son and two daughters. Lucia plays an active role in the daily management of the Gaja Winery and Gaja Distribuzione.
